Vietnamese Translations
Here is a rundown of the Vietnamese used in the show (and some other info for the super-curious).
Titles
In Vietnam, people tend to refer to others by kinship titles. There is a hierarchy that is honored based on age, status, and your birth order.
Ông nội
Grandfather - father's father
Bà nội
Grandmother - father's mother
Ông ngoại
Grandfather - mother's father
Bà ngoại
Grandmother - mother's mother
Chú
Uncle - younger brother on father's side. Also used for men around your father's age or status
Cô
Aunt - younger sister on father's side. Also used for women around your mother's age or status
Cậu
Uncle - younger brother on your mother's side
Dì
Aunt - younger sister on your mother's side (though I did not know this until much later in life; by then, too late to remember to use)
Bác
Uncle or Aunt - older brother or sister on either side (Both my parents are the oldest, so I don't have any)
Em
person who is a bit younger than you
Con
child, especially your own
Cháu
grandchild, sometimes niece or nephew; tends to be used more in North Vietnam than South
